Geoff Johnston is a Dallas-based writer, journalist, columnist, and cultural critic with over a decade of experience documenting the arts, music, and community pulse of North Texas. Best known for his sharp-witted features and deep dives into the Dallas-Fort Worth creative scene, his work captures the cutural collision of local subcultures and mainstream arts.
Geoff spent a few years as a prominent (if intentionally obscured) voice in the city's premier independent publications. As a frequent contributor to the Dallas Observer, he chronicled the region’s nightlife, underground music movements, and theater, profiling everyone from legendary stage icons like Patti LuPone to local hip-hop and electronic trailblazers.
He then brought his unique storytelling style to The Dallas Morning News’ Quick DFW, where his freelance columns offered a fresh, fast-paced take on local lifestyle and current events. He did this while writing as a half-dozen different fictional characters; a veritable newsteam in itself that included star columnist/bon vivant raconteur Alibaster K Abthernabther, a duo of equally unhinged local sportscasters named Zip and Calamity, and a fictional bureau of news statistics.
He later slummed it at D Magazine, where he barfed up smarmy cultural essays and human-interest features for the lily blanco SMU set.
Whether reviewing a symphony performance, interviewing touring musical acts, or writing satirical cultural commentary about a city that is constantly at odds with itself, Geoff’s journalism is defined by its strong voice, narrative depth, and an undeniable affinity for the unique and contradictory character of Dallas, Texas.
Today, Geoff is a huge sellout who leverages his deep roots in media and storytelling as a senior copywriter and brand strategist, helping the world's biggest brands, major business organizations, and upcoming tech enterprises find and forge their own distinct voices.
